Students in science will be working on an essay that needs to be completed by next week in final draft form. The essay is about themselves. When they finish the essay they will be working on a presentation to go with their essay.
This week students will be continuing work on their plant book.

The fast plants are growing more each day. The students ended the week working on their plant book.

Friday, March 28, 2008

The students have just planted Fast Plants. We have looked at Gregor Mendel and his genetic work with peas.

For the next few weeks the students will be studying plants and creating a plant booklet. They will be working each day in class and getting a daily grade for their progress.

They will be keeping a journal with sketches of their Fast Plant's growth. Nothing is coing up yet.

Friday, March 14, 2008

The students have created a variety of different critters using Punnett squares. To continue our genetics study they are bringing home a permission slip so they can watch Gattaca, a movie about genetics in the future.

Thursday, March 6, 2008

The students have started a unit on genetics. They learned about different ways that scientists use genetic engineering to modify life for a purpose. In particular, we investigated a "spider goat" which is a real world example of genetic engineering. Students completed a reading and then developed their own animal which would express the traits of a secondary animal as well. If students did not finish this during class then it was assigned as homework. It is due Monday.

Monday, February 18, 2008

This week the students will be working with a partner to study up for the Science Olympiad competition on Thursday. They will doing a disease puzzler and working on a test on the nervous system for the competition.

Wednesday, February 13, 2008

The students have been working on a mystery disease. They have completed two packets to solve the mystery. They have one more to complete today. All need to be handed in today.

Tuesday, February 5, 2008

The students researched to find answers to some of their questions about diseases. Today they are working on a packet about different diseases. They have readings to help them with the packet.

Tuesday, January 29, 2008

There are only a few presentations left. Some students did not bring in a model for their presentations. These are points not earned for their project.

Next we will be studying diseases.

Sunday, January 27, 2008

Monday and Tuesday the students will be presenting their project on the human body.

Wednesday, January 23, 2008

Frog dissections will be going on for the rest of the week.

Tuesday, January 22, 2008

Progress reports are to be signed by parents tonight.

Frog dissections start tomorrow.

The project presentations have been postponed for a week so that we can do dissections. We will start the presentations next Tuesday. This week models should be made at home for homework.

Saturday, January 19, 2008

The students did a great job on their project. Every group handed in their handout by Friday. Some students did not complete their body systems packet this week. They will be bringing home a progress report to be signed on Tuesday. Those students who still have work to do on their packet will be doing that for homework as well.

Tuesday- Friday: The students will be dissecting frogs and seeing the body system up close.

Wednesday, January 16, 2008

Just an update on the students' progress. Most groups handed in their rough draft of their handout and are on their way to producing the final draft. Two things are due this Friday: the final draft of their handout and their body systems packet. Students should be working on their model for their project in the coming week.

Many students have not handed in their book report due just after winter break. It is overdue!

Wednesday, January 9, 2008

The students are beginning to work on a three week project. They will be researching one part of a body system and becoming an expert. They will create a handout for other students to learn from. They will make a model of their part of the body. They will prepare a presentation for the class.

The students worked on a packet of nine body systems it is due Friday the 18th. Here is a calendar of the upcoming next few weeks:

Happy New Year

In science we have started the new year looking at body systems. We will be doing a quick study of all of the body systems and then the students will study one area in depth. We wil be disecting frogs in the next few weeks as well.
